Application Criteria and Procedure for IDS Faculty Affiliate Appointment

The Institute of Data Science (IDS) at NUS is the focal point for university-wide data science research, leveraging expertise from multiple Schools and Faculties to tackle problems from multifaceted perspectives. It is a university-wide endeavour aimed at pushing the boundary of data science through transdisciplinary upstream research, and translate into real-life applications of lasting value. IDS attracts top-quality students in its unique PhD in Data Science program. The program is jointly administered with NUS Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering, and the students are supervised by leading staff from NUS who are faculty affiliates of IDS.

The vision for IDS is:

  • To be a globally admired institute for groundbreaking data science research with real-world impact.
  • To nurture a next generation”brain-heavy” and hands-on data scientists for Singapore.

To accomplish this vision IDS:

  • Facilitates transdisciplinary research for data science across departments and disciplines.
  • Collaborates with industry partners and public agencies to work on real-life problems and datasets.
  • Recruits talented and motivated students for our unique doctoral program in data science.
  • Appoints faculty affiliates of international caliber from within NUS who are passionate for data science research with real-world impact.

 

  1. An enthusiasm for the aims of IDS.
  2. International distinction in research of data science, preferably of an interdisciplinary nature, and specializes in specific data science capabilities or application domains that are of strategic interest to IDS.
  3. Good track record of student supervision.
  4. Time and willingness to guide and mentor IDS students to conduct interdisciplinary research in data science.
  5. Time and willingness to participate in IDS-led projects on data science with industry partners and public agencies.
  6. Time and willingness to participate in various IDS activities, including curriculum design, innovative coursework, interviews, student recruitment, symposiums and conferences.
  7. For Assistant Professor: Please apply after your mid-term review.

Appointment of IDS faculty affiliate is for three (3) years in the first instance and is then reviewed.

  1. Supervision of PhD students in the IDS-NGS PhD in Data Science program.
  2. Participation in IDS-funded research programs.
  3. Connection to IDS' strategic partners in industry and public agencies.
